Meiringen claims to be the birthplace of meringue pastry and is famous as the site of Sherlock Holmes' fictional death at the Reichenbach Falls. The Aareschlucht gorge cuts 1.4km through limestone with turquoise glacial waters rushing below walkways bolted into the cliff. A base for hiking the Haslital valley and crossing the Susten and Grimsel passes.
